Methodology
Fee Methodology
How we turn Etsys published fee schedule into country-accurate profit numbers — and how you can verify every rate yourself.
The short version
Etsy charges a small set of fees that combine differently by seller country. We model each fee exactly as Etsy describes it, then run every calculation entirely in your browser. No estimates are invented, and no rate is hard-coded into prose — the numbers always come from the fee engine.
Listing fee
A fixed fee billed in US dollars for each listing, charged at creation and again at each sale when the listing auto-renews. Etsy converts the US-dollar amount to your payout currency on your invoice. The calculator shows both the US-dollar amount and the approximate local equivalent.
Transaction fee
Etsys commission on the order total — item price plus shipping charged plus gift wrap. It is a percentage of what the buyer pays, before any payment processing or taxes.
Payment processing
What Etsy Payments charges to process the buyers payment — a percentage of the order plus a small flat amount. The percentage and the flat currency differ by seller country (and for some countries, between domestic and international buyers). The fee is taken as part of the same sale.
Regulatory operating fee
A country-specific surcharge Etsy adds where local digital-services taxes apply. It is a percentage of the order total and only appears for countries where Etsy has enacted it. If your country has no such fee, the calculator simply shows no line for it.
VAT on seller fees
Where local law requires it, Etsy adds value-added tax on top of its own fees. VAT is calculated on the sum of Etsy fees, not on your retail price. The calculator applies it only for countries where Etsy publishes a VAT-on-fees rate; otherwise it notes that no rate is published and you should verify locally.
Offsite Ads
When a sale is attributed to an Etsy Offsite Ad, Etsy charges an additional fee that is a percentage of the order, capped at a fixed US-dollar amount per attributed order. The standard and high-volume tiers and the cap are the same in every country; the cap is always in US dollars.
Currency conversion
When the listing currency differs from your payout currency, Etsy applies a conversion fee that is a percentage of the order. You can model it with the currency-conversion toggle in the calculator.
Share & Save
When a sale comes through your own Share & Save link, Etsy rebates a percentage of the order as a credit. The toggle in the calculator models that credit.
How we verify
Every rate comes from Etsys own publications — the Etsy Help Center and the official schedule at etsy.com/legal/fees. Each country calculator shows the verification date in its trust bar; that is the date we last confirmed every rate still matches. When Etsy updates its schedule, we update the engine and the date together. Before a pricing decision, we still recommend opening the official schedule once more.
Limitations
The calculator is an educational estimate, not financial, accounting, or tax advice. It does not model Etsy Plus, pattern fees, or any promotions Etsy may run. Tax treatment, especially VAT/GST on fees for some markets, can depend on your own registration status — confirm with a qualified professional.
